New WordPress 2.5 delay

The new WordPress 2.5 was slated for release the the 10th (though there was confusion on that original date). On the 9th Jeffro2pt0 posted on Weblog Tools Collection, trying to get people ready for the upgrade. (See: Prepare for WP 2.5) Later that day, the post was edited with the following added:

WordPress 2.5 was TENTATIVELY scheduled to be release on March 10th, 2008. However, it looks like it’s not ready for production treatment and thus, has not been released.

People got very bent out of shape by this announcement. Some calling the makers of WordPress, Auttomatic, unprofessional and such. It was very discouraging. I made a post stating that WordPress is free and we really have no right or call to be so angry about it. Heck, WordPress 2.3.3 works great for me and I’m not even sure I will upgrade when 2.5 is released!

The next day, 10th, another post was made by Mark Goush with the official announcement that the release will be delayed a week. (See: WordPress 2.5 Delayed a Week)

According to this milestone in the WordPress Trac, 2.5 is delayed by a week or even more. There is a lot of work being done on styling, bug fixes and open tickets and even though the milestone is delayed to 3/17/08, a well polished release will be more appreciated and will be better for the community than a rush to release.

More anger from an open source community. I did, however, get a friendly link from Mark regarding my ’sage advice’ in a previous reply.

I think people forget that WordPress is free - and therefore not obligated to abide by any time restraints that an otherwise paid for package may be under. WordPress is open source, meaning that people all over the world are working on this bad boy in their free time.

I think we need to just step back, breathe, drive less coffee and just wait it out. Half the people complaining about the delay are all miffed that they changed the admin style. Really - who cares? If you’re not happy with the changes, don’t download 2.5 and don’t fuss about the handful of time changes.

Will I upgrade? Well, probably not yet. Most of my installed plugins won’t work with 2.5, so I’m not excited about that. I’m happy with 2.3.3 right now and I don’t see many reasons to change.

Sounds like you took a level headed approach to the situation. I admit, I goofed up with that first sentence in my post on WLTC, but going back and correcting it with a mental note is about all I could of done to fix the problem.

I, like many other people really did believe WordPress 2.5 was going to come out at this expected date because of 2.4 being skipped and the hype surrounding 2.5. Well, I guess good things come to those who wait.

While I did come to EXPECT the release, I didn’t really count on it. I know how things end up happening, especially in the world of Open Source. So I just said “I’ll watch for it and try it on a fresh install when it comes out”. I wasn’t all upset when it didn’t make it.

    Ah well. We’ll get there.

In the city-leadership & building game “Sim City”, meeting all the needs & wants of the citizens leads to lower the criteria for complaints.

If there is no police station in the neighborhood, that is their complaint. After building a new station, they complain about, oh, litter in the streets. Put on litter-crews and they complain there are no shade trees, and when there are they complain about the shade.

You can tell how the project is going, simply by watching what are the complaints. The more trifling the nature of the complaints, the more solidly the project is meeting the goals.

When the lustiest complaint-outbursts about a software like WordPress relate to scheduled releases which software-experienced people know are notoriously difficult to schedule … well, we have to know that means the project is going very well indeed. ;-)

@Ted - Good call man! That’s a pretty good analogy of the inner workings of the world!

I would rather wait for the bugs to get worked out before installing the new version. Good things are definitely worth waiting for.

@collegeblogger: Honestly, I’m running 2.6 right now and I’ve had very little problems with it - which is a surprise. It’s really nice. It’s actually weird going back to 2.3.3 which the office uses currently. Clunky and slow.
However, I’m not thrilled with the push on Google junk they’ve been doing lately.

I too have had no issues with 2.6, I have many sites running WP 2.6.1 and they roughly get 200 visitors a day each and have had no issues with hacking or spamming.

@Jamorama Reviews: I also just upgraded my site to 2.6.1 - and so far so good.

I would recommend 2.6 as well. But 2.5 was a fine release as well.

@Ed: Yeah, 2.5 was definitely a milestone for me. It took me a bit getting over the new admin layout … change is good however and I love it now.

2.6.1 I believe is only a security fix. But I’ve read about 2.7 here and there. Glad they’re staying on top of things - though to be honest it may be wiser for them to push their major upgrades back to once a year. I know many people who are getting frustrated with having their websites be out of date every 6 months.

Well I would much rather wait and be sure that everything is working good before I make any changes to my current version.

@divinity degree: All bugs won’t be worked out and never have been, which is why they continue to update and upgrade. 2.6.1 has no issues that I’ve seen. I upgraded the week it was released, and really enjoy it. Try installing it somewhere else to try it out.
