So, it seems that germs are spread readily through the air and by touching things a sick person has already touched. Isn’t that a shocking revelation?

Americans suffer 1 billion colds annually, according to the National Institutes of Health. That’s one reason why Dec. 3-9 has been deemed National Hand-Washing Awareness Week.

Dr. Sawyer likes to point out that if people wash their hands properly and at the right occasions, they will never suffer another gastrointestinal or respiratory illness again.

“Imagine that,” he says. “Never being sick again—what power.”

Ok, I don’t understand how this is so … astounding. I’ve known this since I was little. Wash your hands a lot. It’s just common sense. They taught us that in school. At home. At church.

What you don’t think about, however, is how many places you touch that give you colds. The quote above is about poker players getting colds from the cards they handle. A lady a friend of ours knows got a fatal illness called Meningitis from a shopping cart at a grocery store. She died (hence, fatal illness). The store now provides handwipes by the carts to wipe off the bar before you start using it (which I now do).

Germs are a scary thing. My wife now carries hand sanitizer in a spray bottle in her purse, and whenever our boy is done playing in the play place at the mall, or after church or wherever we go she spritzes his hands and sanitizes him. We need to protect ourselves from the hidden menace.

Germs.

Note: I’m suffering from a cold right now … well, the end of one which means a mean old cough. Ah well. Any suggestions on how to combat a cough? I’ve been drinking lots of tea. Also make a honey and lemon mix that cuts the gunk in the throat. Vapor cream at night. Anything else?
