Sites such as Dig, Reddit, StumbleOn and a slew of others have become increasingly popular over the years for finding new things. Bloggers have found this a very useful way to get their news out. However, an article over on Ezinearticles.com give 5 things you don’t want to do:

  1. Don’t bookmark thousands of your own pages
  2. Don’t create hundreds of accounts & bookmark the same page over and over again.
  3. Don’t bookmark every single page on your web site.
  4. Don’t hammer your ISP by running an automatic tool like this for hours on end.
  5. Don’t buy an automatic posting tool like this unless you completely understand it features and how it works

There are a lot of them out there, and some interesting software that helps track your stats on these. However, I’ll leave it up to you to how you go about doing this. You can manually add IMPORTANT articles (don’t add your little “I went to get a puppy today .. he’s cute” posts) or you can have a service do this.

Here is a list of the top Social Bookmark web sites out there - and I’m sure there are a lot more. You could use a program like Auto Social Poser or BookmarkingDemon … but, again - your call. I’ve never used these since they cost money - and I’ve yet jumped on the Social Bookmarking bandwagon, but a slew of people swear by it.

The next time I post about getting traffic for your site, hopefully I’ll have some results from these and I can report positively! I may have a few more ideas and ‘tricks’ for viral marketing - so yes, stay tuned!

Believe it or not, this is pretty important to getting traffic. This helps build your links and helps in searching for your site. An RSS Feed is basically a list of your last so many posts in an aggregated format. It’s usually Title, Date, Part of the article and a link to the site. People use all sorts of news feeders to get information - so the more RSS feed sites you’re on, the better.

RSS - any of various XML file formats suitable for disseminating real-time information via subscription on the Internet.

For an example of what an RSS is, go to www.taddmencer.com/rss and you’ll see what one looks like. You can use any number of RSS Readers, including Outlook or a slew of add-ons for FireFox or Internet Exploder .. er .. Explorer.

Really easy, really simple and really fast to get your information out there.

I’ve been working on a list of RSS Feed sites that you may want to check out. I’ll only include the free ones, because if you’re like me your advertising budget is next to nothing, or less.

Let me know if any of these don’t work.

It’s important to get your feeds listed on these, or as many as you can. Some of these are ‘pingable’ if you use WordPress, meaning WordPress will send a notification to these places saying to reindex your site. Most, sadly, don’t do this.

Tomorrow ‘Social Bookmarking’

Ok, everyone wants to know effective ways to get more traffic for your web site, right? Heck, I do! If you have a site - you want people to come to it, right?

Let me start by saying that if you really want to push the envelope, you need a system that’s SEP (search engine optimized) friendly. Let’s say you’re using WordPress, because that’s the best way to go. Really.

Let me also say, I’m not an expert. This isn’t an end all and a guarantee to get you the most hits for your site. This is my suggestions and recommendations.

First, in the ‘Settings‘ page, make sure you have ‘Permalinks‘ set up. This is the first, and extremely important, thing you need to do. Otherwise the rest is kind of useless.

TaddMencer002

This is what I roll with. Simple, easy and clear.

Now, on to the plugs - this is where we need to start installing some simple plug ins that will help you really roll out your SEO.

These are some plugs for WordPress that I’d roll with:

Configurable Tag Cloud
A tag cloud plugin for Wordpress 2.3 to give you more flexibility with the styling of your tag cloud. By Keith Solomon.

Google XML Sitemaps
This plugin will generate a sitemaps.org compatible sitemap of your WordPress blog which is supported by Ask.com, Google, MSN Search and YAHOO. Configuration Page By Arne Brachhold.

NoFollow Free
Remove the nofollow tag from your blog’s comments with a lot of options customizable, per user type removal, per comments count removal etc… Supports multilingual and a Top Commenters sidebar Widget. By Michele Marcucci.

Platinum SEO Pack
Complete SEO solution for your Wordpress blog. By Techblissonline Dot Com.

SEO Smart Links
SEO Smart Links can automatically link keywords and phrases in your posts and comments with corresponding posts, pages, categories and tags. By Vladimir Prelovac.

Slashdigglicious (More on social book marking later)
Add user-submission icons and links at the bottom of each post: Digg, del.icio.us, etc. By Robert Tsai.

WordPress Mobile Edition
Show a mobile view of the post/page if the visitor is on a known mobile device. Questions on configuration, etc.? Make sure to read the README. By Alex King.

WP Auto Tagger
Automatically finds tags based on your post content. By iDope.

These are all pretty self explanatory. If I had to pick two or three I’d definitely go with Platinum SEO Pack, Google XML Sitemaps and WP Auto Tagger. These are all pretty important, especially for later in this ‘tutorial’.

Tomorrow - RSS Feeds.

I’m on a "post tutorials" kick. I know I always appreciate finding good tutorials for Photoshop (or 3D Studio Max or .. or .. or) so I figured I’d throw some good ones out there.

This one is pretty need, details and fairly easy to follow. I haven’t gone through the whole thing myself yet, but the general ideas are there. And very cool.

Here is a description from the site:

waterman "I have seen something really interesting on the net a few days that was made by Nik Ainley but I found the tutorial too small. So here is a more detailed one for those who think of using this great technique."

Water effect photo montage

Or as I like to call it "Water man effect".

In the spirit of confusing the crap out of people, I found this tutorial and honestly, it was a good tutorial. Explains some elements in CSS that I had no clue what they meant. So, when searching through www.pixel2life.com I found this tutorial.

simple-layout-in-css-and-dreamweaver
Learn how to make a SIMPLE layout then code it up in Dreamweaver
Very well done. Written by HV-Designs, which seems to have some slick stuff on it.

Here they have a good handful of CSS/HTML tutorials. Very nice.
